TUSCALOOSA, Ala. — The University of Alabama baseball team will be without two of its players when it opens the season this weekend against Valparaiso.
Coach Brad Bohannon announced Tuesday afternoon that junior outfielder Chandler Taylor and sophomore right-handed pitcher Deacon Medders are suspended for the three-game series at Sewell-Thomas Stadium beginning Friday for a violation of team rules.
Taylor led Alabama in home runs (16), RBIs (34), runs (39), total bases (113), stolen bases (seven) and slugging percentage (.601) last season. He played in 52 of Alabama’s 54 games and had a batting average of .282.
He was named second-team All-SEC last season and was the runner-up in the 2017 College Home Run Derby.
Medders was 2-1 with a 4.38 ERA in 15 appearances, including six starts but was primarily a reliever in SEC play. He had a 4.38 ERA with 33 strikeouts and 21 walks over 39.0 innings.
First pitch Friday, Bohannon’s first game coaching the Crimson Tide, is scheduled for 4 p.m. ET (SEC Network+).
