BIRMINGHAM, Ala. — Alabama basketball lost 67-54 to Clemson in the Vulcan Classic on Sunday in Birmingham. It was Alabama’s third loss in four games as the Crimson Tide dropped to 5-5 on the season.
NBA scouts from the Atlanta Hawks, Minnesota Timberwolves, Cleveland Cavaliers, Chicago Bulls, New York Knicks, Orlando Magic, Golden State Warriors and the Phoenix Suns were on hand for the contest.
Player of the game
It wasn’t a particularly good game for anyone, but we’ll go with Avery Johnson Jr. here.
Johnson Jr. led Alabama with 17 points in 28 minutes of action. He was the only Tide player to score in double figures.
Johnson Jr. has been a spark plug off the bench for Alabama this season. He didn’t get much scoring help from his teammates on Sunday.
Stat line of the game
After shooting 53 percent from the floor and 30 percent from 3-point range against USC Upstate, Alabama struggled to hit from anywhere on Sunday.
Alabama shot a season-low 32 percent from the field, including 15 percent (3-for-20) from behind the arc.
Turning point vs. Clemson
Alabama led 9-7 at the 14:03 mark in the first half, but it was all Clemson from there.
The Tigers ripped off a 15-0 run to build a 22-9 lead as Alabama went scoreless for more than 5 minutes. Clemson had a 17-point lead at one point, but Alabama cut it to 12 at halftime.
Alabama showed a little life midway through the second half to cut the deficit to 10, but Clemson immediately knocked down back-to-back 3-pointers to push it back to 16.
What’s next for Alabama basketball
Alabama returns to action on Wednesday when the Crimson Tide face the Arkansas State Red Wolves in the Rocket City Classic. The game will be played in Huntsville, Ala., at the Von Braun Center.
