Alabama basketball has landed its second massive commitment of the day, which should solidify the Tide’s recruiting class in the top 5 of the rankings.
John Petty, a 5-star shooting guard from Mae Jemison High School (Huntsville, Ala.), according to ESPN’s rankings, announced his commitment to Alabama over Kentucky during halftime of his team’s game Thursday night. Petty becomes the second 5-star basketball recruit to choose Alabama on the day as point guard Collin Sexton announced he would play for the Tide earlier in the day.
It was a telling sign that Alabama was the favorite to land Petty after he canceled his official visit to Kentucky late last month on the same day he announced his commitment date.
According to an ESPN scouting report, Petty has the tools to make a significant impact for the Tide.
“He’s a high-level prospect, with a lot of physical tools and natural ability, but must continue to develop across the board in order to turn potential into production on a more consistent basis,” the scouting report reads. “A sure shot high-major prospect. A wing playmaker that has all the tools to be an immediate impact player.”
Petty averaged 19.9 points, 7.3 rebounds, 4.1 assists, 1.8 blocks and 1.8 steals per game while leading J.O. Johnson High School to a state championship last year. Petty was named Mr. Basketball in the state of Alabama in 2015.
