Alabama DC Kirby Smart “very interested” in Virginia Tech job, per report
Add another rumor to the mill that Nick Saban’s Alabama coaching staff is struggling to escape.
Defensive coordinator Kirby Smart is “very interested” in the head coaching vacancy at Virginia Tech, per a report from USA Today‘s Dan Wolken.
Longtime Hokies coach Frank Beamer announced Sunday that he will retire at the conclusion of the season.
Smart, 39, joined Saban’s Miami Dolphins staff as a safeties coach in 2006, then followed Saban to Alabama to coach defensive backs in 2007.
Along with offensive coordinator Lane Kiffin and offensive line coach Mario Cristobal — who both have head coaching experience — Smart has been a popular choice when pundits try to narrow down who will fill the 10 current FBS openings.
No. 7 Alabama hosts No. 4 LSU on Saturday night (8 pm ET, CBS).
