In a surprising move, one-loss Alabama was ranked No. 4 by the College Football Playoff committee on Tuesday night.
Clemson (No. 1), LSU (No. 2) and Ohio State (No. 3) joined ‘Bama near the top.
Last season, the Tide were No. 6 in the initial poll before moving up to No. 1 by December. They fell to eventual champion Ohio State in the national semifinal.
Fellow SEC teams Florida (No. 10), Ole Miss (No. 18), Texas A&M (No. 19) and Mississippi State (No. 20) were also listed in the Top 25 on Tuesday.
The 12-member committee will reconvene five more times before coming to a final decision. Arkansas athletic director Jeff Long and former Vanderbilt coach Bobby Johnson are the SEC representatives.
