Nick Saban and his Alabama staff need not worry about their quarterback “problem” this spring. Crimson Tide fans already have a solution.
We asked our readers who will win the QB battle in Tuscaloosa — Tua Tagovailoa or Jalen Hurts — and they came up with several different lines of thinking. But the most popular was one that would break with Saban’s depth-chart tradition.
In the words of Tide fan Jon Long in Sumner, Ga: “Both of them are too good to pick one or the other.”
Tagovailoa, who sustained an injury on the first day of spring practice Tuesday, was considered one of the best prep passers in the country as a senior at St. Louis High School in Honolulu, and his arm was responsible for one of the greatest throws in college football history last January. Hurts has plenty of detractors, but few can deny he is one of the most dangerous running quarterbacks in the nation.
Perhaps a two-quarterback system might work? It would be a rare move by Saban, who likes having one player leading the team at that position.
Here were readers’ thoughts on the issue:
Dawn Tamika Williams: “Both of them. Some of us fans are quick to dismiss Jalen, but he is the one that got us to the championship! No one wants to talk about the fact that our playbook was stolen right before the Championship! It wasn’t the fact that Jalen was doing such a poor job but it was because they knew all of our plays. That’s why Coach Saban had to change his game plan in the second half! We will be a team to be reckoned with 2 quarterbacks.”
Cheryl Milner (Chelsea, Ala.): “I would like to see both quarterbacks on the field. Jalen got Alabama to two National Championships but just couldn’t finish. He is still a great quarterback. Tua may have a bad game too. We have not had the chance to see that yet.”
Jon Long (Sumner, Ga.): “I think Alabama will have a special package for both of them according to the flow of the game. Both of them are too good to pick one or the other. I think that having the probability that both could play would give opponents something else to prepare for when facing us.”
Laura Cauley: “I think they are both great QBs and have a very special talent. Both are their own and both have great sportsmanship. I do feel they both have different games, so they should both be utilized.”
Wayne Stratton (Fuquay-Varina, N.C.): “I think Coach Saban is going to run a two-headed monster at QB. Can you imagine being the opposing team, not knowing who to prepare for, week in and week out?”
Mack Partain: “When you are blessed with more than one amazing talent, you shouldn’t waste them. This is an opportunity to build the kind of diverse playbook football seldom sees. The challenge to defend against this range of players and plays could be more than most could handle.”
Tua Tagovailoa over Jalen Hurts
Joey Carter (Barnett Crossroads, Ala.): “Start Tua at quarterback put Jalen at wide out, with several options at wildcat on third downs. What a show this could be!”
LaMarcus D. Hughes (Birmingham, Ala.): “After the performance Tua put on in January it seems to be his job right now, however Jalen seemed to improve slightly last season with the exception of a couple bad games. He will need to improve drastically to be the starter this year.”
Casey Morrison: “Tua because he’s more accurate, better at throwing the deep ball, spreads the ball out to different receivers, and is shifty on his feet. The offense looked totally different when he was the QB.”
Roy Champion (Somerville, Ala.): “Hopefully Tua because Hurts can’t throw the ball over 10 yards with any consistency.”
Scott Rytel: “Tua is a better quarterback hands down. Jalen has talent but not enough to keep this train rolling. He looks to do more with his legs when the pocket breaks down. And we saw what Tua does. Love Jalen but his time is over.”
Jalen Hurts over Tua Tagovailoa
Ken Burrell (Chicago): “Hurts had a sophomore slump toward the end of last season. He is ‘d’ guy!”
Lynn Parrott (Pleasant Valley, Alabama): “Jalen. Tua had one good play.”
Nancy Scallorn: “Jalen will. That boy has all that matters.”
