It’s early, but Marcus Spears envisions another matchup featuring Alabama and Georgia happening later this year in Atlanta. To the SEC Network analyst, the Crimson Tide will earn another memorable victory against the Bulldogs at Mercedes-Benz Stadium.
Recently, Spears revealed his early SEC championship pick in speaking to SEC Country. He said Alabama will win the SEC West, and Georgia will come out of the SEC East. In selecting an SEC champion, he gave the edge to the Crimson Tide because of the Nick Saban factor.
“I’ve got Alabama and Georgia in it,” Spears told SEC Country. “Because right now at this point, you basically go with the talent. And I think right now, that’s the main thing, to just go with the talent. And Georgia right now has the most talent. Alabama has the most talent. So I would think that would be the safest pick.
“I’ve got Alabama still winning. I’m not betting against Saban until somebody moves up. Don’t bet against them. That’s very naïve.”
Chances are, Spears will be one of many SEC experts to pick an Alabama-Georgia matchup for the SEC title game. In January, the programs staged a National Championship Game to remember as Crimson Tide quarterback Tua Tagovailoa led Alabama back from a 13-point halftime deficit to claim an overtime victory. In the process, Saban won his fifth national title with the Crimson Tide and his sixth overall.
That result came after Georgia beat Auburn in the SEC Championship Game and topped Oklahoma in the Rose Bowl.
This far before the 2018 season, it’s difficult to produce legitimate challengers for the current SEC favorites. Recently, Spears told SEC Country that Mississippi State will be the Tide’s top SEC West obstacle and South Carolina will be Georgia’s main SEC East threat.
But if the Crimson Tide and Bulldogs play to their potential, it’s difficult to imagine anything other than a second chapter added to the budding rivalry between Saban’s juggernaut and Kirby Smart’s growing power in Athens.
Here’s guessing another Alabama-Georgia showdown would produce a memory to keep.
