TUSCALOOSA, Ala. — Alabama wide receiver Jerry Jeudy was named MVP of the Crimson Tide’s A-Day spring game following his breakout performance on Saturday.
Jeudy caught 5 passes for 134 yards and 2 touchdowns for the White team (second-team offense, first-team defense).
“He’s improved well. He had a good day today,” coach Nick Saban said. “We obviously need some young guys to come through for us at receiver. It’s not a position where we have a lot of depth.”
Calvin Ridley, who Saban called a “special player at the position,” is Alabama’s top target heading into the season. Robert Foster and Cam Sims are currently starters.
Beyond those three, there isn’t much experience at the position. That has created opportunities for young players such as Jeudy and T.J. Simmons to see increased roles. Simmons caught 6 passes for 82 yards and 1 touchdown.
Jeudy was the most impressive player on the field Saturday. He showed off all the skills that made him a 5-star prospect and one of the top players in the 2017 recruiting cycle.
He battled for 50-50 balls, leaping for a touchdown over defensive back Aaron Robinson.
“We need some young players like Jerry Jeudy to continue to grow and develop,” Saban said. “He made significant progress throughout the spring, and I think it culminated into a pretty productive day for him today.”
