Question of the Day: Alabama shouldn’t have to look far for defensive coordinator
The season is over, but we’ll be tackling the best question from Alabama football fans each day. Look for our Alabama Question of the Day between now and spring practice.
Alabama football capped the season with a thrilling national championship win over Georgia. As always, there’ll be turnover on the coaching staff and players will leave, whether it’s because of exhausted eligibility or early declaration for the NFL draft.
What’s your best guess for Alabama’s next defensive coordinator?
At this point, I’d be shocked if Tosh Lupoi wasn’t Alabama’s next defensive coordinator.
Prior to the 2017 season, Lupoi was giving a big raise and rewarded with the co-defensive coordinator tag. Nick Saban has made it a priority to keep Lupoi on staff because he’s one of the top recruiters in the country, and a rising star in the profession. Losing Lupoi would be a big blow to Alabama football staff.
We could see a situation where Lupoi is named defensive coordinator and new hire Pete Golding is named co-defensive coordinator along with whatever position he’ll coach. Golding has experience calling plays, which should help the staff. He also can coach defensive backs or inside linebackers, which is another plus considering the departures of Derrick Ansley (former secondary coach) and Jeremy Pruitt (former inside linebackers coach).
Golding gives Alabama some flexibility to hire another position coach this offseason.
With all of that said, Saban naming anyone other than Lupoi the next coordinator of Alabama’s defense would be a surprise.
