The Crimson Tide pounded Arkansas, 41-9, on homecoming Saturday night to improve to 7-0 on the season, including 4-0 in SEC play.
Crimson Tide running back Damien Harris rushed for 125 yards and 2 touchdowns against Arkansas, averaging 13.9 yards per carry. Harris leads the SEC and is fifth in the nation with 9.19 yards per carry. He’s averaging 11.12 yards per attempt in SEC play.
Quarterback Jalen Hurts had a solid day, accounting for 196 yards of total offense and 2 touchdowns, although he threw his first interception of the season. Freshman receiver Henry Ruggs III continued his streak of only catching touchdowns. Ruggs has caught 4 passes and has 4 touchdowns.
The offensive play-calling was a little weird at times. Arkansas made a point to bring pressure, and it took a while for Alabama to adjust to its quick game to get the ball out of Hurts’ hand earlier.
All in all, Alabama put up 41 points and 496 yards of offense, including 308 on the ground — the Tide’s fourth 300-yard rushing game this season.
Alabama’s defense looked dominant once again. Arkansas could only muster 227 yards of total offense while averaging 3.2 yards per play.
Arkansas gained 27 rushing yards on 29 attempts. Think about that: Alabama held Arkansas to less than 1 yard per carry on the ground. Yes, sack yards are included in that, but it’s still impressive as no Arkansas runner netted more than 18 yards. Arkansas’ longest rush was 10 yards.
Arkansas’ lone touchdown came with 3 minutes left. It was clearly over at that point.
There were three muffed punts, which is something that will need to be cleaned up.
Alabama has too many explosive players not to have a better return game. Some of it is because of how teams punt to Alabama with the rugby style, but Alabama should be able to gain more than 10 yards on punt returns.
