Editor’s note: Alabama football returns a ton of talent, and has a great opportunity to make another run at the SEC championship and earn a College Football Playoff berth.
Over the next few weeks, SEC Country will take a look at Alabama’s 25 most important players. Obviously, there’ll be coaches and other key members around the program who’ll have a big impact on the team’s success. But this list is strictly for the top-25 players for the Crimson Tide heading into 2017.
No. 24: Tua Tagovailoa and Mac Jones, quarterbacks
Tua Tagovailoa and Mac Jones check in at No. 24. We listed both here because we’re still not 100 percent sure how the backup quarterback race will shake out in 2017.
Yes, Tagovailoa was the second quarterback up during Alabama’s A-Day spring game. But how Alabama decides to manage their eligibility this year could get interesting. With starter Jalen Hurts just a sophomore, the quarterback who redshirts would put two years between himself and Hurts.
Tagovailoa shined in Alabama’s A-Day spring game in April. He threw for 276 yards and 3 touchdowns to just 1 interception in the first half of the scrimmage. The freshman wrapped up his first Alabama spring game by completing 17-of-29 passes for 313 yards, 3 touchdowns and the interception.
Both Tagovailoa and Jones have a lot to work on over the summer. They’ll each need to improve to show the Crimson Tide’s coaching staff they have what it takes to play winning football in the SEC.
Still, given the talent of both quarterbacks, look for them to look even better than they did on A-Day once the season rolls around.
