TUSCALOOSA, Ala. — Rising sophomore Trevon Diggs is proving to be a versatile athlete who can play multiple positions.
Last year, Diggs spent the early part of his freshman season splitting time between safety and wide receiver before settling in at receiver. He also served as the Crimson Tide’s punt returner for much of the year.
Diggs caught 11 passes for 88 yards and a touchdown last season. He also registered 5 tackles and a forced fumble. As a return man, Diggs took back 13 punts with a long of 47 yards and averaged 23.7 yards per return on seven kickoffs.
This spring, Diggs has worked at cornerback and has seen time with the first defensive group.
“We’re pleased with the progress that he’s made,” Alabama coach Nick Saban said Saturday. “He’s much more natural playing at corner than when we tried to play him at safety. That’s where he played in high school. He’s long, he’s got good toughness and he’s a good tackler. He plays the ball well in the deep part of the field and he’s done a good job of playing man-to-man.
“I don’t know what we’re going to do with him the rest of the spring. We’ll probably decide something after the end of this when we look at the scrimmage.”
Diggs lined up at left cornerback while Anthony Averett held the right cornerback spot. That moved Minkah Fitzpatrick back to safety next to Ronnie Harrison. Saban said Fitzpatrick worked at corner for the first six or seven practices, but was moved back to safety for the last couple of practices and the scrimmage.
At this point, Diggs appears to be on a similar career path to that of former Crimson Tide star Cyrus Jones.
Jones arrived to Tuscaloosa in 2012 as a highly regarded athlete. He spent his freshman season as a wide receiver and punt returner before switching to corner as a sophomore.
Jones started every game at corner during the 2014 and 2015 seasons, helping lead Alabama to the national title in 2015.
Both Diggs and Jones are from the Maryland area. One thing Diggs has over Jones is height and length. Diggs is listed at 6-foot-2 while Jones stood 5-foot-10.
