(Updated) Nick Saban: Alabama freshman QB is “ill” but out of hospital
Alabama true freshman quarterback Blake Barnett is out of the hospital, according to coach Nick Saban, but he was reportedly not present Wednesday at practice.
UPDATE: Saban admitted that Barnett is “ill” but would not reveal the specifics of his ailment during his Wednesday press conference. He added that while Barnett’s issues are not believed to be serious, he will likely miss the rest of this week’s practice.
“He wasn’t feeling well,” Saban said. Decided to admit him to the hospital for some tests. They found out what the issues is. He’s out. We’re very hopeful that he’ll be fine. He probably won’t be back at practice for another day or two, which kind of puts him out this week.”
Matt Zenitz of AL.com reported Barnett has posted photos and videos on Snapchat, and one Tuesday mentioned that he needed multiple blood transfusions. John Talty of AL.com reported Wednesday afternoon that Barnett posted a video on Snapchat to say he was out of the hospital, but Talty also reported the freshman was not at practice. Zenitz said Alabama declined to comment on the matter earlier Wednesday.
Barnett has been posting photos on Instagram and Snapchat from a Tuscaloosa, Ala., hospital. He also tweeted “I hate hospitals” early Tuesday morning.
One that Barnett posted Wednesday on Instagram had the caption, “My face after being here for the past couple of days. Hopefully I will be able to leave soon. Thank you for all the best wishes! #SoWhatNowWhat.” It has since been taken down.
Barnett was a 5-star recruit and rated the No. 2 pro-style quarterback in the Class of 2015. He was part of a four-man competition for the starting quarterback job during preseason camp, but has not played this season for the Crimson Tide.
