Up until this year’s recruiting class, there were three certainties in life: death, taxes and Alabama having the No. 1 recruiting class. That came to an end in 2018, but a former Alabama QB says don’t sweat.
Based on the 247Sports composite ranking, Georgia took home the top overall class and Alabama checked in at No. 7.
During an interview on WJOX 94.5 FM’s The Opening Drive, John Parker Wilson talked about how there’s no need for concern, mainly because Alabama still has the No. 1 coach in the land.
“I think the biggest thing that hurts the most for Alabama is that one of our own, Kirby Smart, has the No. 1 recruiting class. The guy that we groomed and helped out has now come in our backyard in the Southeastern Conference and getting the No. 1 recruiting class, I think that’s the thing that hurts the most.
“But top 10 is where you want to be. The thing about recruiting, it’s great, 5-stars, and it’s a huge deal now, but it’s about developing the players, and I think coach Saban does that as good as anybody else. That’s what it’s really about.”
Wilson says he always notices friends and ex-teammates tweeting about 5-stars, but the truth is, none of these prospects have any stars once they get on campus.
One example Wilson gave to illustrate how stars mean nothing is CB Levi Wallace, a walk-on who just wrapped up his senior season in Tuscaloosa by earning Second Team All-SEC honors.
“You see a guy like Levi Wallace this year that walks on the team who probably literally had no stars, this year going to be drafted. It depends what you do with the recruit. … It doesn’t matter how great you were in high school. You got to show up on Saturdays.”
