Nick Saban’s influence on college football isn’t just measured by his own success, but in relation to his impressive coaching tree that branches out all over the country.
On Friday, he was asked to put together a coaching staff comprised of one head coach and two coordinators from his coaching tree while walking and talking with ESPN’s Cornell Jones. He chose more than that, making for an extra star-studded group.
“Jimbo (Fisher), Kirby (Smart), Will Muschamp, Jim McElwain and Jason Garrett.”
Considering he mentioned Fisher first, it’s safe to assume he chose the Florida State coach who will stand on the opposite sideline in Week 1 as his dream head coach.
Three other coaches he mentioned are all holding top jobs in the SEC East, while Garrett is entering his eighth season leading the Dallas Cowboys.
Saban holds a perfect 10-0 record against his former assistants: 3-0 vs. McElwain, 2-0 vs. Muschamp, 2-0 vs. Mark Dantonio, and 3-0 vs. Derek Dooley. Improving to 11-0 won’t be easy as Alabama faces Florida State to open the season in Atlanta on Sept. 2.
