Moments after Jake Coker and Alabama defeated Clemson, 45-40, for the national title, the winning quarterback was lost for words.
“It’s hard to explain,” he said on the television broadcast. “There’s nothing else I’ve ever … this is something I’ve dreamed of since I was little. … It’s awesome, man.”
As a boy, the Mobile, Ala., native always wanted a national championship at Alabama.
Now a 23-year-old senior transfer from Florida State, he completed 16-of-25 passes for 335 yards and two touchdowns to bring those backyard fantasies to life.
Monday night, his older brother, Patrick, was watching from the Middle East. An Air Force captain, the elder Coker looked on as Jake delivered a personal message on national TV.
“I love you, Pat,” Coker said. “I love you more than you can imagine. You’ve inspired me this whole way, and I just can’t wait to see you.”
