Alabama is putting together quite a recruiting class for 2017, and the strength of some members of that class was on display Friday afternoon during a tug-of-war at a showcase for recruits in Beaverton, Ore.
The Opening, Nike’s premier summer camp featuring more than 160 of the top prospects in the nation, completed its Friday session with a tug-of-war competition between recruits who have already committed to various programs. The group of future Alabama players — including Najee Harris, Alex Leatherwood, VanDarius Cowan and Tua Tagovailoa — took home the title.
The future members of the Crimson Tide took down commits to SEC rival LSU almost too easily in the quarterfinals before getting a tougher fight out of future Georgia Bulldogs in the semifinals. Alabama recruits came from behind to beat a group of Pac-12 recruits in the championship.
Alabama currently has the No. 2 rated recruiting class in the nation in 2017, according to 247Sports Composite. Only Ohio State’s class is rated higher with three 5-star recruits as opposed to two for the Crimson Tide. But the Buckeyes recruits were also involved in Friday’s tug-of-war competition and Alabama claimed bragging rights.
