After being the only team to finish under-par during the first round, the University of Alabama women’s golf team got off to a rocky start and finished the second round on Thursday in second place.
The Crimson Tide shot 16-over par, putting it eight strokes behind South Carolina heading into the final day of the tournament’s stroke play.
All 14 teams shot over par at the par-72, 6,253-yard Greystone Golf and Country Club Legends Course in Birmingham, Ala.
“We got off to a rough start but we really hung in there,” Alabama coach Mic Potter said in a release. “It was difficult to get close to the hole and the pin locations were tough but we did the best we could given the conditions and we were able to keep contact with the lead. We want to be as high a seed as we can going into match play so we need a good round tomorrow. It’s a matter of going out there and playing our best golf. We’re capable of doing that.”
Sophomore Kristen Gillman and junior Cheyenne Knight were Alabama’s low scorers both shooting 3-over Thursday. Overall, Gillman in fourth on the individual leaderboard, five shots off the lead.
The format is similar to the NCAA Championships, with three days of stroke play and the top eight teams advancing to match play. The quarterfinals and semifinals will be played Saturday, and the championship match Sunday morning (SEC Network).
The third round will begin Friday at 9 a.m. ET. Alabama will tee off last with South Carolina and Arkansas.
