Anthony Averett is still searching for his first career interception. The Alabama senior cornerback certainly has the potential to get that, and much more, in the upcoming season.
The Crimson Tide always have a strong defense that produces top-level talent, so why should 2017 be any different? This year, it could be Averett that is the breakout star.
That’s what NFL.com’s Lance Zierlein is predicting, as he listed Averett at No. 1 on a list of the top 10 college football cornerbacks to watch this season.
Averett was a sprinter and long jumper in high school, and it’s that athleticism that should help him break out this season. Zierlein compared Averett to former LSU cornerback Tre’Davious White, who was drafted by the Buffalo Bills in the first round of the 2017 NFL Draft.
Averett played 15 games for the Tide in 2016, recording 48 tackles and one sack. He also forced a pair of fumbles and ranked eighth in the SEC with eight passes defended.
Averett was the only SEC representation on the list of top 10 corners.
