Alabama’s Avery Johnson visits injured Southern player in hospital, says “he’s gonna walk again”
You can add Alabama basketball coach Avery Johnson to the list of people Devon Gales has inspired over the past three weeks.
The Southern football player suffered multiple fractures in his neck during a game at UGA on Sept. 26, and has since become a symbol of hope while rehabbing at Atlanta’s Shepherd Center.
Johnson — a former NBA star who played basketball at Southern in the late ’80s — was in town for a recruiting visit Wednesday,

The coach discussed his visit after the Crimson Tide’s practice Thursday.
“I’m glad he lifted my spirits about life,” Johnson Matt Zenitz of AL.com. “He thought I lifted his spirits. He’s got a long road ahead. But every day, he’s gaining a yard, he’s gaining a yard. And I believe one day he’s gonna walk again.”
