Alabama’s Derrick Henry becomes first RB in 13 years to win Maxwell Award
The Maxwell Award has passed over several elite running backs since Penn State’s Larry Johnson won it in 2002.
A complete list of empty-handed finalists includes Adrian Peterson, Reggie Bush, Ray Rice, Darren McFadden, Mark Ingram, Trent Richardson and Melvin Gordon.
Thursday night, Alabama’s Derrick Henry avoided adding his name to that group.
The Maxwell Football Club voted Henry (1,986 rushing yards and 23 touchdowns) the best player in the country over Clemson quarterback Deshaun Watson and Stanford running back Christian McCaffrey.
He’s up for the Heisman Trophy against McCaffrey and Watson on Saturday (8 pm ET, ESPN).
