Shortly after polishing off another top-ranked recruiting class, Alabama coach Nick Saban dismissed any outside analysis that might be directed at his elite crop of high school talent.
“Perception doesn’t win any games for us around here,” he said, “but good players do.”
Now that Alabama has collected six straight No. 1 classes (per 247Sports), it’s at least safe to say that recruiting sites are on the same page with Crimson Tide coaches in terms of talent evaluation.
“We thought they were outstanding players,” Saban said. “Very athletic guys. Both of ’em can run. They’re instinctive players, and the goal for us is going to be to teach those guys as much as we can as soon as we can, because this is a position where we’ve had lots of guys in the past contribute as freshmen.”
The Crimson Tide counted on several freshmen during their national championship run this past season.
Could we see a repeat?
“Until these guys sort of grow and develop, you really don’t know what kind of class you have,” Saban said. “It’s everybody’s guesstimate at this point as to what kind of class we really have. We’re excited about them. We’re pleased with ’em. But you can’t make predictions about these types of things … We certainly look forward to trying to help them develop in every way so they can have a successful college career here.”
