Avery Johnson knows a thing or two about great coaches.
Johnson spent over a decade in the NBA playing for a variety of coaches, perhaps none more famous than Gregg Popovich. Johnson was a member of the Spurs’ 1999 NBA championship team and was later the head coach of the Dallas Mavericks, who appeared in the 2006 NBA Finals.
And Johnson, who currently coaches the Alabama men’s basketball team, sees a lot similarities between Popovich, who has won five NBA championships, to Alabama football coach Nick Saban, who has won five national titles.
“They’re cut from the same cloth,” Johnson said. “He (Popovich) talks a lot about having great chemistry amongst his coaching staff, going through the process, going from good to great, and that’s what I appreciate about Coach Saban.”

Saban and the football team are off this week. The NBA season begins this week, with the Spurs tipping off against the Golden State Warriors on Tuesday. Alabama basketball has its first game on Nov. 11 against Coastal Carolina.
