Jared Mayden’s father, James, played basketball at Oklahoma in the mid-90s, and his mother was also a Sooner. Admittedly, Jared told SEC Country that living up to the Mayden legacy at Oklahoma weighed on him a bit, but in the end, he decided on a new path.
Mayden, a four-star cornerback from Sachse (Texas) High School, committed to Alabama over Oklahoma during a ceremony at his school. Nick Saban and Crimson Tide defensive coordinator Jeremy Pruitt paid Mayden a visit at his home recently. Both men made it clear how badly they wanted him to be a part of this class.
“They only have one safety and no cornerbacks committed in this class right now. They just said that they are really trying to get me,” Mayden said.
You may remember Mayden as the recruit that got Saban to wobble during that visit. It was the second instance of Saban stepping out of his comfort zone this recruiting season.
“We had music playing the whole night, and before he left, and we were telling him that he had to dance with us before you leave. So we played the Wobble and he started dancing,” Mayden said with a laugh.
After he was finished dancing, Mayden also got to see another side of Saban that many college football fans don’t get to see often.
“He was laughing really hard,” Mayden said. “It looked like he had fun.”
Saban is probably dancing now with the Tide landing Mayden’s commitment.
