After talks reportedly slowed between Lane Kiffin and Florida Atlantic, the Alabama offensive coordinator may be back in the race to be the Owls’ next head coach.
FootballScoop reported Monday that Kiffin had re-emerged as one of the two top candidates for the Owls. The program was reportedly in negotiations with Kiffin on Friday, but those talks had “broken down” during the weekend.
“(Sunday night) we also heard that Lane Kiffin might have come back into the fold,” the report said. “We’re told an announcement could come in the next day or two.”
FootballScoop’s Zach Barnett also reported Monday that Michigan offensive coordinator Tim Drevno is the other top candidate.
Barnett reported Alabama coach Nick Saban was supporting Kiffin’s candidacy “in part so he is not available to become LSU’s offensive coordinator.” Saban reportedly did the same thing for Kiffin when he was up for the Houston job.
Drevno has a big-name coach in his corner as well. Ironically, Ohio State coach Urban Meyer is campaigning for him. But Meyer has his own motives for doing so.
“Drevno is being pushed by Urban Meyer as a means of weakening Michigan,” a source told Barnett.
Meyer may have influence in the search. He knows FAU athletic director Patrick Chun from when Chun worked in Ohio State’s athletic department.
