Heisman Trophy winner and rookie Tennessee Titans running back Derrick Henry is wearing a No. 2 uniform in preseason camp, but he will need to change jerseys before the regular season to meet the NFL’s requirement for running backs (any uniform number between 20 and 49).
According to ESPN.com‘s Paul Kuharsky, Henry wants No. 24, which cornerback Perrish Cox currently possesses.
Cox is fine with switching… but only if a desirable number opens up. Essentially, he’s waiting to see which fellow players get cut this month before agreeing to a swap that would give Henry No. 24.
Why is the running back — who wore No. 27 and No. 2 at Alabama — so eager to get those particular digits?
“I just think 24 is a good running back number,” Henry told Kuharsky. “Perrish is a good dude. We’ll have to see.”
Henry was impressive in the Titans’ preseason opener last week, rushing for 74 yards and a touchdown on 10 attempts. He’s part of a new-look Tennessee backfield that also features free agent signee DeMarco Murray, the 2014 NFL rushing champion.
