Calvin Ridley broke former Crimson Tide wideout Amari Cooper’s freshman receiving yards record last season, but could he eventually topple Cooper’s other statistical accomplishments?
The rising sophomore, who reeled in 89 catches for 1,045 yards during his freshman campaign, was able to burn opposing secondaries with his elite speed. He has a long way to go to catch Cooper statistically, but one ESPN analyst thinks he already has Cooper beat when it comes to pure running ability.
“He’s a faster Amari Cooper,” ESPN college football analyst Tom Luginbill said on Monday’s Out of Bounds radio show.”Calvin Ridley is the most dangerous wide receiver in the SEC West this season.”
Cooper, who was picked by the Oakland Raiders in the first round of the 2015 NFL Draft, posted a time of 4.42 seconds in the 40-yard dash at last year’s NFL combine. He owns the Alabama record for career receptions (228), receiving yards (3,463) and receiving touchdowns (31).
Ridley ran the 40-yard dash in 4.35 seconds during Alabama’s spring testing, according to an AL.com report. He would need 140 catches, 2,419 yards and 25 touchdowns during the remainder of his time with the Crimson Tide to break Cooper’s marks.
A lot will depend on the team Ridley has around him, specifically at the quarterback position, but he certainly has the speed to contend with Cooper among the all-time great wideouts in Alabama history.
