There are bold preseason predictions, and then there are BOLD preseason predictions.
ESPN.com writer Alex Scarborough ventured into the world of the latter as part of the website’s panel making bold 2016 SEC predictions.
While others were predicting breakout seasons for Texas A&M or increased sack totals for the league, Scarborough had something much more bold on his mind. In his own words:
This will be Lane Kiffin’s last season at Alabama. After producing yet another 3,000-yard passer and helping the Crimson Tide to yet another SEC championship, the head coaching offers will come rolling in and he’ll emerge as a candidate at — wait for it — Auburn.
Lane Kiffin to Auburn? That’s a prediction that likely would turn the state of Alabama upside-down.
First, that prediction is making the assumption that Gus Malzahn will fail so badly in 2016 that the Tigers job will be vacant. Next, it’s assuming that the Auburn administration would swallow its pride and interview an Alabama assistant for its head coaching job.
Then, it’s assuming that Kiffin would have the guts to spurn Crimson Tide fans for their hated rival in a state which values college football more than most. Not to mention the betrayal of Nick Saban, who graciously offered Kiffin a landing spot after head coaching runs at Tennessee and USC ended in turmoil.
Will this happen? Probably not. Is it fun to consider the possibilities on the last day before real SEC football begins? Absolutely.
