Alabama, the top-ranked team in the nation, travels to No. 6 Auburn on Saturday to play in the annual Iron Bowl with a lot on the line, including a possible spot in the College Football Playoff.
For ESPN college football analyst Booger McFarland, the Crimson Tide could lose the game and still get in the playoff.
Speaking after the CFP rankings were released, McFarland stated that if the Tide were to get defeated by the Tigers, which would mean missing the SEC Championship game, Alabama will still be in the top four when it is all said and done.
Alabama’s strength of schedule has come into play if the Tide do not go undefeated, as the big-time non-conference game against Florida State has turned into a knock on Nick Saban’s team, with the Seminoles having a down year and sitting at 4-6 on the season.
Kirk Herbstreit disagreed with McFarland’s assessment, saying that Alabama “only has their name” when it comes to the rankings.
The key wins so far for Alabama has been against No. 18 LSU and at No. 14 Mississippi State.
