One former Alabama quarterback will have divided loyalties when the Crimson Tide plays Clemson in Monday’s national championship.
One of Sims’ good friends is Deshaun Watson, the Clemson quarterback who replaced Sims at Gainesville (Ga.) High School. Of course, Sims started at quarterback for Alabama during last year’s run to the College Football Playoff.
So who is Sims rooting for on Monday?
“Me and Deshaun have that relationship from Gainesville High School, but I’ve got to go for the Alabama team because that’s my hometown,” Sims told SEC Country.
“Alabama is where I graduated from. I had a great year there. So I’ve got to go for them. Alabama is my home team. That’s my heart.”
Even though Sims is pulling for the other team, he has nothing but love for Watson: “I’ve been watching the man play this season. I always knew Deshaun was going to be something great. I’m very proud of him.”
Sims also had complimentary things to say about his replacement as Alabama’s quarterback, Jacob Coker: “I tip my hat off to him for this season. I think he kept playing his game, and he got his players to believe in him. The chemistry just became stronger and stronger. I think he became a leader. He got the team to believe in him. The chemistry is great.”
Back to Monday’s game: Sims, who played in the CFL this past season, thinks it’s going to be a close one to the end. “Remember Vince Young and the Texas-USC game? It’s going to be one of those last-second drives with a minute left. Remember when I was at Alabama and we had that 50-second drive at the end of the LSU game with him? I think it’s going to be one of those endings, with Alabama pulling it out.”
Maybe the toughest question for Sims is this: Who was more deserving of the Heisman trophy? Alabama running back Derrick Henry (who won it) or Watson (a finalist for the award)?
Sims paused for a few seconds. “I’ve got to say … I can’t really … you know … both of them are my brothers. I’ve got to pass on that one.”
Sims said he is driving to Tuscaloosa, Ala., on Monday to watch the game with friends.
