Tuesday he went on the Paul Finebaum Show to discuss a number of topics including the often discussed topic of comparing Nick Saban and Bear Bryant. While he stopped short of calling Bryant better, it’s somewhat clear he thinks Saban has some advantages.
I loved coach Bryant, there is no question about that. There is only one coach Bryant…its hard to compare different eras. It’s like comparing the old yankees to the present day games. Coach Saban has more coaches on his staff. They may have a handful of analysts, I didn’t even know what that word was when I was coaching. It’s an advantage when you can do that.
While Saban has four national titles to Bryant’s six already, the primary arguement for Bryant is simply the immortal status he reached in the state of Alabama in 25 seasons. It’s a number Saban might never reach and it seems like Saban has a lot of tenure already at 10 seasons. Bryant was an Alabama alumnus, too. While Stallings tried to play the politically correct role, it’s clear Saban still has some more winning to do.
Though Stallings didn’t leave out the praise for Saban either.
One thing people may not realize is that they have done the best recruiting job year after year. I think it has been 10 years without being an underdog. That says you have good players, when you have good players that are well coached you’re tough to beat. So that’s what they do well, they coach well and recruit well.
