Maurice Smith announced his intention to transfer last week and is already receiving interest from multiple schools.
Georgia, Miami, Maryland and Southern Cal are among those with an early edge, according to AL.com’s Matt Zenitz, who cited sources.
Miami, in particular, has been pursuing Smith aggressively and contacting him daily, per Zenitz. Of course, the Hurricanes are headed by former Georgia coach Mark Richt. Richt’s replacement, Kirby Smart, was Smith’s defensive coordinator at Alabama.
Smith was slated to start as Alabama’s nickelback this year, and was competing with the first-team defense during the Crimson Tide’s spring game. He recorded 15 tackles and a sack last year in 15 games.
He started two games in his first two years in Tuscaloosa, but never was able to consistently crack the starting lineup.
Louisville and Houston are other schools that have contacted Smith, per Zenitz.
He will have one year of eligibility remaining and be able to play right away.
