How likely is Alabama to be the last remaining unbeaten team in the FBS?
After entering Week 8 with 10 competitors for the title of the “last unbeaten,” the Crimson Tide took care of one of its competitors for the crown all by itself. Alabama beat Texas A&M 33-14 in Tuscaloosa, handing the Aggies their first loss of the year and crushing their dreams of a perfect season.
Much to the pleasure of many SEC fans, Urban Meyer’s Ohio State Buckeyes also were eliminated from this competition in Week 8 as James Franklin’s Penn State squad handed the Buckeyes a surprising 24-21 loss in Happy Valley.
The Crimson Tide moved to 8-0 with their win against the Aggies, making Alabama one of just two FBS programs with an 8-0 record. The other is MAC power Western Michigan.
Alabama has a bye in Week 9 before closing the regular season with four November matchups.
Let’s compare Alabama’s remaining schedule with those teams that are still vying for a perfect season of their own.
vs. Mississippi State
Chattanooga was never going to be a factor, and at this point it’s fair to say that Mississippi State probably won’t be one, either. That leaves a trip to LSU and and home game against Auburn as the biggest stumbling blocks remaining for the Crimson Tide. Alabama should be favored in both games, but they are fierce rivalry games against Top 25 opponents, so anything could happen.
And now, for the others:
at Florida State
at Wake Forest
vs. South Carolina
A matchup with the Seminoles looms large next weekend, and never count of the Gamecocks in that last game of the season.
vs. Kansas State
vs. Texas Tech (AT&T Stadium, Arlington, Texas)
at West Virginia
The Bears are halfway through their schedule, and the back stretch is loaded with quality Big 12 programs. There is A LOT of work left to be done here.
West Virginia (6-0)
at Oklahoma State
at Iowa State
Much like fellow Big 12 team Baylor, the Mountaineers have their hands full with the back half of a schedule that features some big-name programs.
at Michigan State
at Ohio State
Jim Harbaugh’s squad has been steamrolling the competition, but, as always, circle that final week meeting with Ohio State as the one to watch.
at Ohio State
There’s no way the Cornhuskers survive their next two games at Wisconsin and at Ohio State, right? RIGHT?
Western Michigan (8-0)
at Ball State
at Kent State
This one has the makings of a 12-0 regular season if the Broncos remain focused.
Boise State (7-0)
vs. San Jose State
at Air Force
Another Broncos squad with a clear path to a 12-0 regular season record.
vs. Arizona State
at Washington State
The Huskies likely will be favored in each of their final five games, but there are some tricky games on this schedule. Beware.
