Editor’s note: Alabama football returns a ton of talent, and has a great opportunity to make another run at the SEC championship and earn a College Football Playoff berth.
Over the next few weeks, SEC Country will take a look at Alabama’s 25 most important players. Obviously, there’ll be coaches and other key members around the program who’ll have a big impact on the team’s success. But this list is strictly for the top 25 players for the Crimson Tide heading into 2017.
No. 23: Hootie Jones
Hootie Jones checks in at No. 23, given how important he is to Alabama’s secondary.
Jones played mostly special teams during his first two seasons before becoming a key member of the secondary as a junior last year.
Jones played in all 15 games last season. He finished with 20 tackles, 5 pass breakups and 1 forced fumble.
This season, Jones could be a starter if Alabama decides to move Minkah Fitzpatrick from safety to cornerback. If not, Jones will serve as a safety in the Crimson Tide’s dime defensive package. He’ll also be a leader and a key contributor on special teams for Alabama football.
At 6-foot-2, 215 pounds, Jones is a big, physical safety who should play a key part in the success of Alabama’s defense.
Coming Thursday: A talented, but inexperienced offensive lineman
