The College Football Playoff committee chairman Kirby Hocutt explained the decision to put the Crimson Tide over the Buckeyes.
“We went with a one-loss Alabama team, losing in the final game to the No. 7 team in Auburn,” Hocutt said. “More damaging was the 31-point loss to Iowa. The selection committee just favored the full body of work from Alabama.”
Hocutt added that Alabama was clearly the No. 4 team in the country. Alabama lost 26-14 to Auburn, while Ohio State lost twice, 31-16 to No. 2 Oklahoma and 55-24 to Iowa, who went 7-5.
This is a statement by the committee in that it does matter how and who you lose to. This is the second year in a row that the Big Ten Champion has been left out of the playoff.
Alabama will take on Clemson in the Sugar Bowl on Jan. 1. Ohio State will wait to find out which game it will be playing in.
