Several teams played their way out of contention for the College Football Playoff on Saturday, but ESPN analyst Kirk Herbstreit’s top four teams remained the same. Following a dominant win against Mississippi State on the road, Alabama solidified its spot in Herbstreit’s top four:
- Clemson (10-0, 7-0 ACC)
- Alabama (9-1, 6-1 SEC)
- Ohio State (10-0, 6-0 Big Ten)
- Oklahoma State (10-0, 7-0 Big 12)
The next two teams are Oklahoma (9-1, 6-1 Big 12) and Notre Dame (9-1).
The Sooners got into the mix following a big road win against Baylor. Florida, which got a road win against South Carolina, remains the only other SEC team that likely has a chance to get into the Playoff. LSU was upset by Arkansas on Saturday, and needs a lot of help to get back in the discussion.
If the Gators and Crimson Tide take care of business in the final two weeks of the regular season, the SEC Championship game could be a de facto quarterfinal game for a spot in the College Football Playoff.
There’s still plenty of time for things to shake up even more, and if history is any indication, it will get crazy over the next few weeks.
We’ll see how Herbstreit’s selections compare to the College Football Playoff committee rankings when they come out Tuesday at 7 p.m. ET on ESPN.
