Editor’s note: Coming off its fourth national championship in seven seasons, Alabama returns a ton of talent, and has a great opportunity to repeat as champions in 2016.
Over the next few weeks, SEC Country will take a look at Alabama’s 25 most important players. Obviously, there’ll be coaches and other key members around the program who’ll have a big impact on the team’s success. But this list is strictly for the top 25 players for the Crimson Tide heading into 2016.
11. Minkah Fitzpatrick
Fitzpatrick has the talent to be an All-SEC defensive back., and his versatility allows Alabama to be even more creative in the secondary.
Fitzpatrick is an aggressive playmaker with a nose for the end zone, as he returned both of his interceptions for touchdowns and also scored off a blocked punt.
The rising sophomore from Old Bridge, N.J., added 45 tackles, including three tackles for loss and two sacks. The former 5-star recruit also led the team with 11 pass breakups.
Fitzpatrick was one of 14 Alabama players named to Athlon Sports’ preseason All-SEC teams.
This spring, Fitzpatrick slid from the star position to the perimeter cornerback spot opposite Marlon Humphrey. That’s where he’ll play in Alabama’s base defense. However, Fitzpatrick could slide back to the star when the Tide runs its nickel and dime sub packages.
Fitzpatrick’s continued development will be key to Alabama’s defensive success this season.
