TUSCALOOSA, Ala. — One bit of good news that has come out of Alabama’s fall camp was walk-on linebacker Jamey Mosley being awarded a scholarship on Monday.
Mosley is the younger brother of former Alabama great and current Baltimore Ravens linebacker C.J. Mosley. But the younger Mosley didn’t rest on his famous last name. He’s one of the hardest workers on the team which is evident when watching Alabama practice.
“I’m really happy to announce that we gave Jamey Mosley (a scholarship) — we didn’t give it to him, he earned it — and I’d like to say he earned it on his own,” Saban said. “He’s worked very hard and can probably make a contribution to our team this year. … We have a lot of good walk-ons here which really has improved the quality of our practices as well as we’ve had some guys like Michael Nysewander who have contributed on the field in a pretty significant way. Parker Barrineau. So we want to reward positive performance when it comes to these guys and what they do and we’re happy to announce that.”
Early in his career, Mosley was long and lanky and looked more like a basketball player. Now he’s added weight and looks like a player who could have a role on the team even if it’s just on special teams.
“It makes me feel great. I think it makes the team feel great,” Saban said. “Obviously it’s a great reward for the player, but I’m telling you in this case, Jamey earned this on his own. He’s worked really hard, he gives great effort in practice. When I announced it last night to the team, there was a roar that went up. It’s heartfelt for me, but also it was sort of amazing to see how happy the players were for him. But that’s what a team is all about. I’m really happy for him. Hopefully we’ll have some other guys who will surface in that regard as well.”
Alabama players took to social media to show their support of the decision.
