Recruiting question of the day: Surprise under-the-radar recruit who will sign with Alabama

The early signing period has passed and Alabama is trying to obtain another No. 1 recruiting class come February. With recruiting ramping up, SEC Country’s Chris Kirschner will answer the Recruiting Question of the Day every day of the week. You can ask him your questions on Twitter or on Facebook. Find our previous questions and answers here.

First off, it’s a hard question to answer because if Alabama is recruiting a player, is that person truly under-the-radar? I don’t believe so. Anyways, I get what you’re asking here.

There’s usually at least one player who is underrated or overlooked. I think Eddie Smith, a 3-star cornerback from Salmen High School (Slidell, La.) could be that recruit.

Smith is the nation’s No. 66 cornerback in the 2018 class. He was once committed to TCU but de-committed from the Horned Frogs in December. Since then, SEC schools like Alabama, Tennessee and Mississippi State have shown interest in Smith.

The 6-foot, 178-pound prospect will take an official visit to Alabama next weekend. It’ll be his last trip before he makes his decision on National Signing Day.

Smith named Tennessee his leader after last weekend’s visit to Knoxville. But I feel like that will change once he visits Tuscaloosa next weekend and realizes the opportunity he would have if he signs with Alabama because of how thin the secondary is going to be next season.

I expect Smith to end up signing with the Tide come Feb. 7.
