Maurice Smith announced his intention to transfer from Alabama about four weeks ago, but things haven’t gone according to plan.
The defensive back was unsuccessful in multiple attempts at getting a release last month, according to AL.com’s Matt Zenitz, who cited sources.
It was reported that Georgia, Miami, Maryland and Southern Cal are among the teams with an early edge for Smith.
Smith was slated to start as Alabama’s nickelback this year, and was competing with the first-team defense during the Crimson Tide’s spring game. He recorded 15 tackles and a sack last year in 15 games.
He started two games in his first two years in Tuscaloosa, but never was able to consistently crack the starting lineup.
He will have one year of eligibility remaining and be able to play right away.
