A day after its colleagues in the industry at CBS Sports nearly unanimously picked Alabama to retake the College Football Playoff championship, Sports Illustrated has one-upped them.
In SI’s midseason crystal ball predictions, all of its college football writers — all of them — have picked Alabama to claim the title. You can take a look at their full playoff four-team College Football Playoff picks and analysis here.
The team of Andy Staples, Bruce Feldman, Joan Niesen, Chris Johnson, Eric Single, Molly Geary, and Scooby Axson all chose the Crimson Tide to play in the Sugar Bowl before claiming the title. Four of the seven analysts have SEC compatriot Georgia joining Alabama in the playoff.
And two of them have landed on very interesting scenarios which would have Alabama and Georgia meeting for what would likely be the second time in a couple weeks.
Johnson picked Alabama and Georgia to meet in the Sugar Bowl semifinal, with Alabama winning to advance. Niesen has Alabama and Georgia coming through each of the semifinals to meet in Atlanta about a month after they would have played in the SEC Championship in the same city.
Those scenarios would make for a wild few weeks between the teams that are heavily linked, with Georgia head coach Kirby Smart having spent many seasons as an assistant to Nick Saban. But there’s no doubt it would be fun.
