Senior defensive back Maurice Smith will transfer from Alabama and seek to play somewhere in 2016 as a graduate transfer, Matt Zenitz of AL.com reports.
Smith was slated to start as Alabama’s nickelback this year as he worked his way up the depth chart. He recorded 15 tackles and a sack last year for the Crimson Tide.
His sack came against Auburn and was a big momentum play for Alabama as it pulled away and eventually won the game.
He started two games in is first two years in Tuscaloosa, but never was able to crack the starting lineup. He was used in the rotation of cornerbacks against spread and muti-receiver looks. He was the primary “dime back” for Alabama in passing situations.
His role was mostly instructing the younger players and helping them adjust to the college game. Shoulder injuries limited his junior season.
With just one year of eligibility remaining, Smith is moving on somewhere else.
