Bottom 6th – 8:36 p.m.
Still nothing doing for either team. Nine outs left for each. Texas A&M still up, 3-2.
Bottom 5th – 8:17 p.m.
Trevor Stephan struck out the side and he has eight on the game now. Really just the one bad inning. But that one is enough for the Aggies to lead, 3-2.
Fourth inning – 7:56 p.m.
Not a lot of action for either team in the fourth. Texas A&M is still ahead, 3-2.
Bottm 3 – 7:30 p.m.
Oh, boy. Stephan had retired the first two batters of the inning then disaster struck. A single and a hit-by-pitch with two outs brought to the plate freshman Braden Shewmake. The A&M second basemen went oppo – a shot to leftfield gives the Aggies a 3-2 lead. Reminder: Momentum isn’t real.
Bottom 2 – 7:12 p.m.
Trevor Stephan liked the lead he was staked to, apparently. He sat Aggies hitters down 1-2-3. Razorbacks up, 2-0.
Top 2nd – 7:03 p.m.
A pair of RBI singles from Jax Biggers and Jake Arledge have punched the Razorbacks ahead first. It’s 2-0 in the early going.
1st inning – 6:52 p.m.
Both teams had a batter reach, but neither was able to do much with either. No score through one.
Game 1 Preview
The Arkansas baseball team has a lot to play for down in College Station against Texas A&M in the teams’ final SEC regular-season series.
The Razorbacks can finish as high as second overall in the SEC and win the SEC West with a series sweep. And a bit of luck. More than anything, Arkansas wants to see itself hosting an NCAA regional in two more weekends. Doing that requires a series win against the Aggies, probably.
You can find a whole slew of potential scenarios for Arkansas. The most realistic one to propel the Diamond Hogs into the top 4 of the SEC, which would give them a first-round bye in the SEC Tournament next week, is easy. If the Razorbacks win one more game than Mississippi State this weekend, Arkansas leapfrogs the Bulldogs and stays in front of the Aggies. That ensures a fourth-place (or better) finish.
Accomplishing it is the difficult part. Texas A&M is a top 25 team. The Aggies are locks for the NCAA Tournament. They are top 5 in the SEC in hitting and have the top earned-run average in the conference, too.
Remember, the games are Thursday, Friday and Saturday. No Sunday game. Sunday is largely a travel/rest day as teams head to Hoover, Ala., for the SEC Tournament next week. That begins on Tuesday.
