FAYETTEVILLE, Ark. — The Arkansas baseball team dispatched Grand Canyon in both games of a doubleheader on Wednesday at Baum Stadium.
The Diamond Hogs won Game 1, 11-2, and the nightcap, 6-1. Game 1 was a continuation from the day before when severe weather forced a postponement to Wednesday. The Razorbacks (24-6 overall) began the day with a 3-0 lead and never had any trouble the rest of the way.
The second game was a bit tougher. Or, rather, it was competitive for longer. Arkansas led 3-0 again, but this time it was in the fifth inning. Grand Canyon stuck around. But Jared Gates knocked a two-out, two-run double to right-center field to force an Antelopes pitching change and provide some breathing room.
All 10 Arkansas batters reached base in the first game as the Diamond Hogs collected 11 hits and walked 8 times. Gates and Eric Cole each homered.
The second game was the Alex Gosser show. The senior from North Little Rock, who doesn’t often see time behind catcher Grant Koch, went 2 for 3 with a double, 2 RBI and a run. Kacey Murphy, the Razorbacks’ starting pitcher, also was excellent. Of the 12 outs he recorded (4 innings), 10 came on strikeouts. Diamond Hogs pitchers struck out 18 Grand Canyon batters in the second game, too, which is a season high for the staff.
The nightcap victory provided Arkansas with its fifth win in its last six games. Mostly, the Antelopes were a good warm-up for this weekend when the Razorbacks host LSU for a three-game set in Fayetteville.
What’s next for Arkansas?
Dave Van Horn’s team hosts LSU on Friday, Saturday and Sunday. Friday and Saturday’s games are at 6 and 6:30 p.m. and Sunday’s is at 1 p.m. Arkansas currently sits tied atop the SEC West, while the Tigers are two games back.
