Picking SEC games is folly. Take Arkansas’ game against Georgia on Tuesday night in Athens, Ga., for example.
The Razorbacks are, by most accounts, the better team. The Razorbacks have a deeper roster, a more established coach, a superior record (though, granted by just one win and the same amount of losses as the Bulldogs). National pundits think higher of Arkansas. Mike Anderson’s bunch is “in” just about every NCAA Tournament bracketology out there, typically as Nos. 8-10 seeds. Georgia is on the outside of those postseason projections, generally among the so-called “last 8 out.”
Georgia, however, is a 1 1/2-point favorite against the Hogs at Stegeman Coliseum. The difference between the two teams is that close. That’s with Georgia having lost three of its last four, too, including the one win coming by just one point. Still the Bulldogs are favored.
An Arkansas win would be massive. Not only would it move the team back to .500 in SEC play and send one of its closest competitors for an NCAA Tournament spot a game back in the standings, it would be the right note to start on as a less difficult portion of the schedule. A road win looks mighty good to the selection committee, too, especially one against a good team.
Georgia may be a good team. The Bulldogs certainly aren’t a bad team. They have a great player, anyway, in Yante Maten. He’s the best senior in the conference, for sure, and should be the league’s player of the year — though he won’t be because Georgia won’t finish high enough in the standings. In fact, he’s the only player averaging double figures.
Arkansas shouldn’t be scared of Georgia. The Bulldogs aren’t supremely talented. They are physical and difficult to play against, though. The Razorbacks have had issues with such teams in the past.
