FAYETTEVILLE, Ark. – The panicky will become the panicked if the Arkansas basketball team loses to Ole Miss on Saturday.
The Hogs are 2-4 one-third of the way through the SEC season. Not exactly what was anticipated after a dynamite nonconference slate. Solace can be taken, though, the last time Arkansas started 2-4 was 2013-14. It became worse that season, a 2-7 conference start, before Bobby Portis and Co. ripped off six consecutive wins near the end of the year and only a collapse in the SEC tournament kept them out of the NCAAs.
No one around the program really wants to have to do that again, though. So, beating the Rebels at Bud Walton Arena is vitally important.
On paper, Arkansas is better than Ole Miss. The Rebels are balanced, featuring five players who are averaging double digits in scoring. But they’re hardly terrifying. They were picked in the preseason to finish below Arkansas.
But Ole Miss has been far better than the Razorbacks. Andy Kennedy’s bunch has wins over Florida and Mississippi State, two teams that have already beaten Arkansas. The Rebels would be 4-2 in league play, too, instead of 3-3, had the game-winning attempt against Texas A&M earlier this week not rolled off the rim at the buzzer.
The Arkansas faithful will be there Saturday, but if their team continues to play like it has it won’t be long until the boo-birds show.
Saturday is as close to must-win as any game this season.
