Step one in Arkansas basketball’s postseason starts now.
The Razorbacks fell just short of earning a double bye in the SEC Tournament this week when they lost to Missouri in the final game of the regular season. The defeat knocked the Hogs down to the No. 6 seed where they face off against a team, at least, they’ve already beaten once this season.
South Carolina knocked off Ole Miss in the No. 14/No. 11 seed de facto play-in game Wednesday night. This means Arkansas is getting a tired team. In fact, the Gamecocks may be mentally tired, too. They won by just a point, 85-84.
Add to that, Arkansas defeated South Carolina rather handily when the two met Feb. 6 in Fayetteville. The Razorbacks were never really threatened in an 81-65 win. A win, by the way, that was the start of a six wins-in-seven games stretch for coach Mike Anderson’s team.
In a way, South Carolina put Arkansas in this spot. In a positive way. At that time, the Razorbacks were on the NCAA Tournament bubble. Now, no matter what happens Thursday night inside the Scottrade Center, Arkansas will hear its name called on Selection Sunday. What it can play for Thursday, though, is a better seed. If the Hogs win, and keep winning, Arkansas could earn a No. 6 seed or perhaps higher.
If Arkansas loses, South Carolina will have dealt a serious blow to the Razorbacks’ chances of advancing beyond the second round for the first time in 20-plus years.
