FAYETTEVILLE, Ark. — Arkansas coach Bret Bielema is never shy to show off his sense of humor when given the opportunity.
On Thursday night during his weekly radio show at the Catfish Hole, he did just that when a fan in attendance asked if the Razorbacks’ defense would be able to get set in time to defend Texas State’s up-tempo offense this Saturday. Arkansas had struggled to get set before the ball was snapped on a few occasions in a 41-38 overtime win at TCU last Saturday.
Here’s the exchange:
Fan: “Over half a dozen plays (against TCU), the defense wasn’t ready when the TCU offense was. If Texas (State) has any sense at all, they’re going to even speed it up more than that. What are you going to do?”
Bielema: “Can I nickname you Captain Obvious?”
Fan: “Well, you only get three timeouts.”
Bielema: “I hope you have a better Thursday this week, all right? Yes, it’s definitely a situation that we like. I think we did a good job in the first half. We went in 13-0 and I think our guys just kind of naturally relaxed. Most of that occurred in the third quarter when things got rolling a little bit. And like I said, Texas State actually snaps the ball three seconds faster than TCU, so we’ll have to get lined up at least five seconds faster.”
Fan apparently asking about linebacker Brooks Ellis: “How many IVs can he take, you know? In the second half to slow them down?”
Bielema: “Appreciate the time. We’re going to have to start screening our callers.”
