Arkansas coach Bret Bielema laid into his kickers during Saturday’s spring game.
Last year’s starter, Cole Hedlund, didn’t look like the kicker who had converted all but one field-goal attempt during spring drills. Hedlund missed four kicks on Saturday alone and backup Adam McFain didn’t fare much better, making only three of his five attempts.
Bielema isn’t one to keep his thoughts to himself, and he made sure to convey his displeasure to both after the first quarter kicking competition. He was pleased with how they responded.
“I went over there and lit them up a little bit, and they responded 100 percent after that,” Bielema told The Arkansas Democrat Gazette’s Bob Holt.
What exactly did Bielema say to his kickers? Well, that may be a bit too explicit to repeat.
“I don’t think you can print it,” Bielema said. “Just a little motivation that if we don’t perform better, we’ll just go for it on every fourth down. A PG version.”
Arkansas will need more from its kicker this season. Hedlund made only nine of his 15 field-goal tries, but was a perfect 58-for-58 on extra-point attempts.
