FAYETTEVILLE, Ark. — Arkansas coach Bret Bielema fielded several question over the past week about freshman running back Devwah Whaley’s lack of playing time in last Saturday’s 21-20 win over Louisiana Tech.
Whaley had just 2 carries for 1 yard in his collegiate debut. Following the game, Bielema said Whaley probably should’ve been given more carries in the second half. However, Bielema also added he hesitated to put in a freshman late during a close game.
Rawleigh Williams III, who rushed for 96 yards and a touchdown on 24 carries against Louisiana Tech, is set to remain the Hogs’ primary running back against No. 15 TCU on Saturday. But Bielema said Thursday on his weekly coaches show he would like to see other running backs, including Whaley, receive a larger share of the carries.
“I think we’ve got to do a better job rolling guys through there,” Bielema said. “Mix in a little Kody Walker, mix in a little Devwah Whaley, see where it goes. Maybe a little Duwop (Mitchell) and let those guys roll through there and have fresh legs.”
